News in Brief from Bailieborough Cootehill

Active Travel Funding

Some €735,000 has been allocated to Cootehill under Active Travel funding. €500,000 of the allocation had already been earmarked for works at St Aidan’s (€225,000) and St Michael’s Estate (€225,000), it was revealed at the Cootehill Bailieboro MD meeting on Friday.

Cllr Aiden Fitzpatrick (FG) welcomed the funding and asked when the works would be carried out now that funding has been made available.

Director of Services, Paddy Connaughton, said that the intention is to carry out works on Station Road “if at all possible this year”.

Cllr Paddy McDonald (SF) then highlighted how the right-hand side of the footpath on Cavan Street is “dipping” and a number of people have fallen as a result.

“Can this be fixed or will it come out of Cavan County Council’s discretionary funding?” he asked.

The executive committed to assess the situation.

Road at Tesco roundabout

The road surface on the Tesco roundabout in Bailieborough has completely broken down. That’s according to Cllr Sarah O’Reilly (Aontu) who added that works carried out in the area before Christmas “haven’t worked”.

Director of Services, Paddy Connaughton, said it’s a matter the local authority is concerned about because “a ridge” had developed and car wheels are getting caught in it. “I accept there is a problem there,” he said.

Meanwhile, area engineer Clinton Mulligan said repairs would be carried out at the roundabout in two weeks. He added that an assessment of the area indicated clearly what needed to be done.
