Smart meter installation continues across Cavan

There are now over 1.6 million smart electricity meters installed in homes, farms, and businesses nationwide. ESB Networks has been rolling out smart meters since 2019 in co-operation with the Department of Communications, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, and all electricity suppliers.

The electricity meter upgrade does not affect a customer’s existing electricity price plan with their supplier. It provides customers access to the enhanced benefits of a smart meter. This includes giving customers accurate and regular information on their electricity usage and ensures no estimated bills.

To view electricity usage information, a customer with a smart meter just needs to set up their ESB Networks Online Account to access this data. Registration is a straight-forward process on www.esbnetworks.ie/myaccount.

The upgrade to smart meters allows suppliers to offer their customers new services and price plans, which enables them to shift some of their electricity consumption to times of the day when energy is cheaper.

The rollout of smart meters is a key part of the microgeneration support scheme, introduced in 2021. This scheme enables customers who generate their own electricity (eg from solar panels) to receive payment from their supplier for any excess electricity sold back to the grid.
