Quarry extension sought in Ballyconnell

Quinn Building Products Ltd is seeking planning permission to continue quarrying near Ballyconnell.

The size of the area covered stretches to almost 112 football fields.

In its application, incorporating the areas of Aughrim, Mucklagh, Gortoorlan and Snugborough, the local production firm wants to quarry the lands with “progressive restoration of the development site and the complete rehabilitation of a former shale quarry” over a 20-year period.

The application to council planners was accompanied by an Environmental Impact Statement.

The lands are covered by a previous time limited planning consent granted by An Bord Pleanala from 2017.

That decision considered that quarrying in the area was ‘in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development’.

Meanwhile, Quinn Packaging Ltd is seeking an extension of time in respect of plans to construct a 21,574.04m2 mixed plastic bottle recycling facility at Scotchtown/Mucklagh, Ballyconnell.

The proposed facility was first granted in 2010.
