Call to ‘reinstate’ Bereavement Grant

Cllr Shane P. O’Reilly has called on the Government to reinstate the Bereavement Grant, which was worth €850 and was discontinued in 2013 due to the recession.

During the March meeting of Cavan County Council, Cllr O’Reilly raised the matter through a notice of motion in which he asked the Government not only to reinstate the grant but to increase it as well.

Speaking on the matter, the local area representative in Mullagh and undertaker, said the grant ceased on December 31, 2013, and served as “a great help” to some people who lost a loved one. “People were able to pay for funeral costs and bury loved ones with dignity and respect,” Cllr O’Reilly continued.

“I’m calling on Minister Humphreys to reinstate the Bereavement Grant because it was a lifeline for many, many people.”

He received unanimous support for the motion from his colleagues and all agreed to write to the Minister to highlight the issue.
