Numerous motorists in Cavan charged over road offences this weekend

Driving under the influence of cocaine and unaccompanied just some of the offences committed on the roads this weekend

It was a busy Easter Bank Holiday weekend for members of the Cavan Roads Policing unit. Members stopped a number of motorists and made arrests during their four-day road safety campaign.

Over the festive period, the unit stopped the driver of a vehicle which members discovered wasn’t insured after their automatic number-plate recognition system (ANPR) kicked in.

The driver also produced a Learner Permit and was subsequently charged with driving unaccompanied. The car was then seized under section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

Shortly thereafter, members of the unit stopped a second car only to see the driver testing positive on the roadside for cocaine. The motorist was arrested and conveyed to a local garda station where a blood sample was taken. This has since been forwarded to the Medical Bureau Road Safety for further analysis which will determine the course of the investigation.

Later that evening, a driver failed to stop for the Unit in Cavan town. Members observed the motorist making a number of “dangerous manoeuvres” on the road. The driver then drove across the border in an attempt to evade the Roads Policing Unit but was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. The motorist has since been charged and will appear before the district court later this year.
