Former RTÉ reporter Ciaran Mullooly linked with European elections bid

The former RTÉ Midlands correspondent Ciaran Mullooly is understood to be considering a run in the upcoming European elections.

A number of media outlets today (Friday) reported that the former broadcaster would be seeking election as an MEP for the Midlands-Northwest constituency.

Mr Mullooly has been cited as a potential candidate for the new Independent Ireland party, which recently recruited Roscommon-Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice as one of its most high-profile members.

In a social media post today, Ciaran Mullooly said he would be making his intentions clear shortly in relation to the European elections.

"I am aware of media reports today on my possible candidacy for the European parliament," he wrote.

"I have been attending a funeral in my own community with my family today, and will issue a response later at an appropriate time. Thank you."

After retiring from RTÉ in 2021, Mr Mullooly took on a role as a community development and social enterprise worker with Roscommon Leader Partnership.

Earlier this year he moved to a tourism and economic development role with Longford County Council.
