Leona loses out to incredible Korda

Cavan's Leona Maguire took on the world number one in the final of the T-Mobile Match Play in Las Vegas but was unable to prevent American Nelly Korda from picking up her fourth LPGA tour title of the year.

In a repeat of the Solheim Cup test from which the Cavan golfer, Korda got off to a flying start, going four-up through seven by winning the second hole, then birdied three straight holes at five through onawards at the impressive Shadow Creek golf course.

Leona stayed in the contest, but Korda was unstoppable on the day, winning 4&3 on the day.

Both players had been in sparklingly form all weekend, Korda unflappable from the tee, and Leona unmatched in her approach play.

Leona paved her way to the final by defeating rivals Moriya Jutanugarn in the quarter-finals and then Sei Young Kim in the semis after the tournament switched from match play to single elimination.

The Ballyconnell golfer fended off the challenge of Thai Jutanugarn 4&3, and latterly Kim 3&2 where she was 3up through the first 15 holes.

She has been in brilliant form all weekend, carrying it through from Friday when Leona holed four birdies to card a leading top-seed earning round of three-under-par 69.
