Local SF MEP says 'von der Leyen must not be re-elected'

The EU president launched her re-election campaign yesterday.

Local Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus has warned that Ursula von der Leyen must not be re-elected for a second term as President of the European Commission.

President von der Leyen launched her re-election campaign yesterday.

Mr MacManus said her presidency has caused serious concern for Ireland on a number of key issues and “its clear that she must not be allowed to continue in her role with another term”.

“Ms Von der Leyen´s handling of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been appalling and severely damaged the European Union’s credibility as a partner for peace and an honest broker for any future negotiations,” he continued. “Her unwillingness to call for an immediate ceasefire and sustainable peace is a mark of shame for the European Union.”

Mr MacManus went on to accuse the EU President of being one of the driving forces behind the growing militarisation agenda of the EU which, he added, “disrespects Ireland’s long-held neutrality”.

“She has indicated that the next European Commission should include a dedicated defence commissioner but such moves would be a clear violation of Irish neutrality,” the local MEP added.

“The people of Ireland are rightly proud of our history of neutrality. Ireland’s neutrality must be protected. I, and all of Sinn Féin’s European election candidates, have been absolutely clear that we will oppose Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election.

“Shamefully, Fine Gael members have indicated their support for her. I am urging all of the parties’ European election candidates to come forward and let the people know where they stand on this without delay.”
