'High volumes' presenting at Emergency Department in Cavan

Patients urged to source "alternative pathways" of care

The high number of patients attending Cavan General Hospital's Emergency Department has seen management urge people to consider alternatives where appropriate.

The memo was shared by Suzann O'Callaghan, General Manager, Cavan & Monaghan Hospital with all GPs across Cavan and Monaghan advising them of the pressure the Emergency Department is under. Ms O'Callaghan however stressed that the ED is still providing "full emergency care if it is required".

Today's announcement follows a series of similar such notices warning of "high volumes of patients", the latest issued in February 26.

However there is hope that pressure on the ED will be alleviated in the long-run as Cavan General is set to benefit from a brand new Emergency Department as part of a major capital investment. Read more here.

This morning's memo from Ms O'Callaghan reads: "Please be advised our Emergency Department is experiencing high volumes of patients. We would appreciate your support in using alternative pathways e.g. GP, pharmacy etc.

"We are still providing full emergency care if it is required.

"Thank you for your support."
