No injuries were reported, and no arrests made to date.

Gardaí are investigating what's been described as a case of alleged “criminal damage” after a car was apparently set alight near Cavan Town centre last week.

“Investigations are ongoing at this time,” say gardaí, following the blaze, which occurred in the early hours of last Thursday, April 11, on an upper level within the Newcourt multi-level car parking complex.

Located near to both residential and commercial premises, emergency services were called to the scene, including two units attached to Cavan fire service who fought to prevent the fire from spreading any further.

Footage of the burning car, engulfed by flames with large plumes of smoke coming from the roof and doors, was shared with The Anglo-Celt by an onlooker.

A member of An Garda Síochána confirmed that “no injuries” were reported, arising from the incident, and as yet “no arrests have been made”.

Their statement said: “Gardaí attended an incident of criminal damage by fire that occurred on Church Street, Cavan Town at approximately 1:15am on the 11th of April 2024.”

The spokesperson added: “Investigations are ongoing at this time.”
