Coked up driver caught speeding at 162kmph

755 detections for speeding during recent National Slow Down Day, April 19-20.

A driver stopped for speeding well in excess of the legal 100kmph limit also failed a roadside drugs test.

The driver was stopped by local gardaí over the weekend, with an image shared on social media showing the car clocked at a speed of 162kmph.

They also tested positive for cocaine, was arrested and a blood sample taken.

The driver has since been charged to a court in Cavan for dangerous driving.

The detection happened after An Garda Síochána's National Slow Down Day campaign, which took place over April 19-20.

An Garda Síochána and GoSafe recorded 755 detections for speeding during that period.

During the 24 hours of National Slow Down Day, GoSafe checked the speeds of 163,146 vehicles, and detected 225 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

During the same timeframe, Gardaí conducting high-visibility speed checks across the country intercepted 530 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

They included a driver clocked travelling 127km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N2 Annamarran, Carrickmacross, Monaghan; and another at 77km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the Monaghan Road, Castleblayney, Monaghan.

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, reduce injuries on our roads and save lives.
