New MRI scanner on the way
The MRI scanner in the Radiology Department at Cavan General Hospital is set for a major €1M upgrade.
Deputy Brendan Smith (FF) confirmed the update from the HSE earlier this week.
Cavan General Hospital had applied to the HSE National Equipment Replacement Programme last year for a complete and full refurbishment.
“I understand that some preparatory work has been undertaken and that the new upgraded MRI scanner will be in place during the course of the year," Deputy Smith stated.
The new machine is due to be in place and operational later this year.
"Such equipment is extremely valuable and an essential diagnostic tool in hospitals such as Cavan General.
"This is an issue I have pursued for some time with the Minister for Health and with the HSE and I am glad that progress is being made,” he continued.
Cavan and Monaghan Hospitals currently have two CT scanners and one MRI scanner, located in Cavan General. However concerns had been raised about the MRI scanner as a result of breakdowns.
Access to the both the CT scanners and MRI are prioritised on clinical need.
