Young Cultivators reach national finals

Four students in Bailieborough Community School have cultivated their way to the finals of The ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards.

The Young Cultivators; Daire Conlan, Shane O’Brien, James Mulligan and Andrew Carolan started lasagne gardening on a small patch of land within the school grounds earlier this year. They reached the Ulster semi-finals of the awards which took place in March 27 at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, Craigavon.

They will now attend the All-Ireland finals in Dublin on May 8 at the Convention Centre Dublin. Their project sought to raise awareness of the damage caused by food imports. The students highlighted the importance of locally produced food for our health and the planet.

Each of the students come from a farming background and are well aware of how their food comes to plate. Using this knowledge, they decided to try and buy less and grow more.

With their vegetable and herb garden “coming on very well” they will be “heading off” next Thursday to present their exhibit and project to the judges at the awards when the overall winners will be announced.
