More than 500 boys and girls competing at the Féile

43rd year Féile Peile na nÓg.

Many excited youth players gathered on various football fields of Cavan on Monday 5th to take part in this year’s John West Féile. 13 Under-15s boys’ and 17 Under-15s girls’ teams competed in three divisions in seven locations.

In the beautiful morning sunshine, the first matches of the day started simultaneously in Breffni, Killinkere and Ramor for the boys. The Virginia pitches saw the Cavan Gaels win Division 1. The boys from Arva came first place in Breffni where chuffed captain Adam Johnston accepted the trophy on behalf of his teammates.

Killinkere CLG were “delighted” to have been successful in their respective Division 2. U15s Coach and Chairperson Tony Ryan said it was a fantastic achievement for the team who are looking forward to competing on a national level at the finals in Derry at the end of June. “It is great for the winners to go through, especially because they can play against teams they otherwise wouldn't meet.” He complimented the County Board on the well organised event. Jim Smith Park also saw the U15s girls compete in Division 3. Laragh took the win here over Lavey.

Cavan Games Development Officer Dermot McCabe said that even though since Covid the competition had become smaller in numbers, it was great to see all the teams coming together on this Bank holiday playing throughout Cavan for a spot on a national arena in Derry.

Mullahoran was the place to be for the Division 1 and 2 girls finals in the afternoon. In a contested Division 2 match, Crosserlough were successful over the Castlerahan/Denn amalgamation. Finally, the captain of the U15s Kingscourt Stars lifted the trophy in Division 1 surrounded by her cheering teammates. Certainly, a lasting memory for the girls from Eastcavan.

Marking its 43rd year, Féile Peile na nÓg is an integral part of the football calendar for underage players. “It has nurtured a wonderful enthusiasm for our games and has been the making of many friendships and memories”, said Uachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns. Jane Cahill, Cavan LGFA PRO, saw many talented, enthusiastic players come together in thrilling matches.

"The girls showed great team work, enthusiasm determination and skill. These girls are credit to their clubs and they show the immense quality of Ladies Football in Cavan at underage," she said
