Largest ever Cavan ploughing event

The Cavan Ploughing Association hosted its largest ever ploughing event last weekend, which drew an estimated 2,000 people from all over the country to Crosserlough.

“It’s was the biggest crowd we ever had in County Cavan at a ploughing match,” said Jim Vogan, who is the National Ploughing Association Director for Cavan.

“We haven’t even got doing up the sums yet,” he added.

On the day there was tractor, horse and vintage ploughing; loy digging; trade stands; a pet farm; a dog show; amusements and music by popular Donegal country music entertainer, Paul Kelly and his band.

Jim said the committee have been working hard all Spring however the last two weeks was “busy” with “making sure everything came into place.”

Thankfully for all involved, the day passed without a hitch.

“The weather makes the whole thing and that was part of why there was so many out with the brilliant sunshine and the ground in good condition.”

He praised the “great location” provided by Rodney Wilton, where several All-Ireland finalists were crowned.

In the Junior category Jim Vogan and Patrick Donnellan have qualified, Andrew Tully in the three-furrow class, Daniel Packenham in the trailer class, in the farmerette class Charlene Magee came out on top, Liam Dolan in the single furrow class, Wayne Wedlock in the classic class, Alex Wedlock and in the novice class, Dillon Heaslip in the under 21 class, PJ McStay and Thomas Tierney in the Loy digging class, Stefano Howell in the under 21 Loy digging class, and Pauric McCabe in the two furrow vintage diesel class.

Presentations will be made to the successful ploughmen and women this Saturday (May 10) in the Shantully Inn at 8.30pm, where everybody is welcome.

The National Ploughing Championships take place in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly on September 16-18.
