America footballer Tom Brady.

‘Greatest quarter back of all time’, Tom Brady, to discuss Cavan roots on Late Late tonight

American Football legend, Tom Brady, whose great-grandfather came from Cavan, will be on the Late late Show tonight.

Just over an hour ago, the line-up for the final episode of this season’s Late late was announced with Brady joining Joe Duffy, Nadine Coyle and Ireland’s Eurovision entry, Emmy, on the famous sofa.

His father Tom Snr’s family came from Milltown, Co. Cavan.

According to The Irish Times, Tom Snr’s father was Harry C. Brady (Tom Jr’s grandfather), born to Philip Francis Brady and Nellie G Donohue. Philip was born to John Brady and Bridget Bailey, while Nellie’s parents were Dennis Donohue and Margaret Devenney.

Tom Snr’s mother was Margaret Peggy Buckley (Tom Jnr’s grandmother), daughter of Michael Buckley and Barbara Lally. Michael’s parents were Patrick Buckley and Bridget Donlen, while Barbara was born to Martin Lally and Elizabeth E Moore.

John fled Ireland during the potato blight in the mid-1800s and came to Boston, where he found work as a labourer. There, he met fellow famine refugee Bridget from County Cork. The pair married and had two sons, with records showing they lived at a home in south Boston before moving to San Francisco to join Bridget’s family.

In 2023, Tom’s father, mother and two aunts on the Brady side surprised many at the Blessing of the Graves in Drumlane Abbey in Milltown when they showed up to pay their respects at their family plots.

Now, the “greatest quarter-back of all time” is back in Ireland for a Late Late appearance, and who knows, likely another visit to Milltown and County Cavan.

RTÉ are billing tonight’s “exclusive interview” with Brady as a chance to “discuss his Irish roots and his deep connection to Ireland”.

Tune in to RTÉ 1 tonight from 9:35pm where no doubt, Tom will talk more about his family ties to Cavan and Cork.
