Over €200k spent on Reserve army base

Over €200,000 has been spent on rent for the Cavan Reserve Defence Forces base over the past 10 years.

The figures were contained in a parliamentary response from Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Simon Harris, to the Social Democrat’s Holly Cairns last week.

The Army Reserve is the reserve land component of the Irish Defence Forces. It is the second line reserve of the Irish Army. The Department of Defence has a tenancy agreement in place for the Cavan-based C Coy - 27 Infantry Battalion for 13 years.

Since 2015, €211,560 has been spent on renting the Cavan building. The department rents a total of five buildings nationally for the RDF, and according to the figures close to €700,000 has been rent paid over the past decade.

In addition, ground rent is paid in respect of a number of properties where the Department owns the building but not the land. This was not included in the figures provided to Deputy Cairns.
