Contents of St Louis Convent to go under the hammer

Victor Mee to host decorative interiors sale

The contents of St Louis Convent in Monaghan will farm of a decorative interiors sale hosted by Victor Mee Auction later this month. The one-day auction, taking place next Wednesday, May 14, will see 600 lots of interiors, antique furniture, lighting, ecclesiastical brass and religious art go forward for sale.

Much of the catalogue contents have come from St Louis Convent in Monaghan, which closed earlier this year. Founded in 1859 by the Sisters of St Louis, the convent was, initially, entirely French speaking but became one of the first schools to introduce Irish or “celtic” as a curriculum subject in 1895. One of its most famous students, in the 1930s, was world-renowned stage and screen actress Siobhan McKenna.

With such local provenance, the team at Victor Mee Auctions is most proud to have been consigned to auction a portion of contents from the renowned and historical convent. One of the stand-out lots appearing is Lot 232, a beautiful 19th century six-door bookcase. A colossal piece, it looms large in the auction rooms ahead of the sale with much pre-sale interest thanks to its impressive stature and capacity. It goes forward with an estimate of €800-€1200.

Another notable bookcase appearing is Lot 83, a 19th century pitch pine, two-door bookcase. It is another massive piece, with two arched glass panelled doors. It appears with an estimate of €600-€1200. One of the furniture highlights is Lot 229, a striking pair of 1970s leather upholstered club chairs by Bart Van Bekhoven. Known for his bold silhouettes and use of luxurious materials, Van Bekhoven’s work from the 1970s to 1990s has become highly sought after and hard to find. This particular pair are illustrative of his signature style and have been consigned to the auction house in fantastic condition. They go to auction with a guide of €800-€1200 for the pair.

There are a number of refectory tables appearing. Lot 76 is a beautiful and classic Oak refectory table. Once used for communal dining in the “refectories” of Monasteries, such pieces have since found much favour in country houses and manor kitchens. They are highly prized for their timeless design, incredible durability and ability to anchor a dining space with character and historical provenance. Lot 76 is a stunning example and goes to auction with an estimate of €1,000-€2,000.

Also appearing in the catalogue is an exquisite array of lighting. Lot 369 is a spectacular 19th century, French-gilded, brass, six-branch chandelier. Richly decorated with floral motifs and frosted glass shades in the form of shells, the chandelier features scrolling arms and classic detailing throughout, combining decorative refinement with functional charm. It goes to auction, valued at €300-€600.

Items for auction can be viewed at Victor Mee Auctions Cavan auction rooms in advance of the sale, Monday to Friday from 10am until 5pm. The auction will go live online from 6pm on May 14.
