Cavan ranks fourth lowest for business closures

According to data, 19 businesses have closed in Cavan so far in 2025.

A new study reveals Cavan ranks fourth for the lowest number of business closures in 2025, with 23 closures recorded per 100,000 people.

Procure.ie analysed CRO data of more than 3,250 business closures recorded across Ireland in 2025 to date. Each county’s closure rate was calculated per 100,000 people, based on the most recent CSO population estimates.

Along with Cavan, counties Mayo (18.1), Kilkenny (21.1), Offaly (22.9) and and Laois (23.9) also had low numbers of businesses shutting up shop.

According to the data, 19 businesses have closed in Cavan so far in 2025.

When adjusted for population, this equates to 23.3 closures per 100,000 people, placing the county in the top 5 nationally.

While every county has felt the impact of rising costs and ongoing economic uncertainty, businesses in Cavan are considered particularly prone due to a combination of factors- including limited access to support schemes, rising overheads, and shifts in consumer behaviour.

The pressures are being felt especially among SMEs and independent retailers, who often operate on tighter margins.

The county with the most business closures in Ireland per 100,000 people was Dublin (121.04).

Next with almost half that figure is Louth (60.8), followed by Clare (60.2), neighbours Meath (55.7), and Wicklow (52).

The Capital has witnessed more than 1,000 business closures so far this year- highlighting that even the country’s most economically active regions aren’t immune to the pressures faced by businesses today.

The study highlights an increasing disparity between counties. While larger or commuter-heavy counties like Dublin, Meath, and Wicklow show higher closure rates, some smaller and more rural counties appear to be managing to retain more of their local businesses.
