New Online System Will Ease Burden on Families Carers
A new online system that will ease the burden on families caring for children with disabilities has been welcomed.
Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Deputy Brendan Smith has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary of a new online application service for Domiciliary Care Allowance, now available on MyWelfare.ie.
Deputy Smith stated, “I speak to parents right across the constituency on a regular basis who are the unsung heroes of our communities, caring, resilient and utterly dedicated to their children with disabilities. These parents go above and beyond every single day, and their efforts deserve not only our praise but meaningful support.”
“This is a measure that will help them,” he continued. “The ability to apply for Domiciliary Care Allowance online will make a real difference, making the system more accessible, less stressful, and quicker to navigate. I recognise that there is more to do, but this is a positive and practical step forward.”
The new online application system is part of a wider commitment by the Department of Social Protection to modernise and digitise services, aiming to have 90 per cent of services available online by 2030. With over 3 million transactions already completed through MyWelfare this year, this latest development will make it easier for over 58,000 families currently receiving Domiciliary Care Allowance to manage their supports efficiently and securely.
Deputy Smith added, “Too often, families who are already dealing with significant daily challenges find themselves facing bureaucratic hurdles. By removing paper-based delays and enabling real-time updates, this move helps ensure that supports reach those who need them, when they need them.
“I encourage all families who are eligible for this support to apply online through MyWelfare.ie.”
Deputy Smith concluded stating, “I will continue to work with my Fianna Fáil colleagues in government to ensure people with disabilities, their families and carers who tirelessly look after them get the support they need and deserve.”
