Over 100 acres impacted by Cuilcagh fire
"The affected bogland continues to smoulder and produce smoke," a Cavan County Council spokesperson stated.
Fire crews are continuing to monitor a fire in the Cuilcagh area, where it is estimated that over 100 acres of land has been impacted.
According to a spokesperson from Cavan County Council, fire service units were "once again" in attendance at the "ongoing" fire in the Cuilcagh area last night.
"The affected bogland continues to smoulder and produce smoke," the spokesperson stated.
Following an assessment by the Cuilcagh team, the spokesperson said it is estimated that over 100 acres have been impacted by the fire. Both bog and forested areas have been affected.
"The fire crews are monitoring the situation closely," the spokesperson stated.
While it is hoped rain expected tonight will "assist in suppressing the fire" they said "alternative methods will be deployed if necessary to fully extinguish the remaining embers."
Dowra and Ballyconnell fire services initially attended the fire, which occurred between the areas of Dowra and Blacklion, late on Sunday evening. It was subsequently brought under control shortly after midnight according to a source from the fire service.
The fire was "smouldering" on Monday and was "largely under control" however fire service units from Dowra and Ballyconnell continued to monitor the area closely to ensure that the fire did not reignite. Units once again attended the fire on Monday night.
It comes as just over one month ago, people across west Cavan and Fermanagh were shocked to observe a fire burning on Cuilcagh Mountain on the evening of April 3 and into the night.
Firefighters tackled the large gorse fire on Cuilcagh Mountain, which could be seen almost 20 miles away.
At the same time, Dowra fire service was in attendance at a forestry fire covering approximately 8 acres of land from 10pm to 2am.
