Caitlin excelling in multiple disciplines

The Anglo-Celt Community & Sports Awards, in partnership with Mannok and Kingspan, will take place this evening in the Cavan Crystal Hotel. Caitlin Crowe is a finalist for Young Sports Star of the Year...

Caitlin Crowe is a fifth-year student at Loreto College Cavan and is an active football player for her school’s team with whom she has won three All-Ireland PPS Junior A championships. Last March she was selected for the Irish rugby U18s team and played in the Six Nations in England.

According to U18s squad coach Matt Gill, the Drung native is “a very exciting young player who brought huge energy, a very high skillset, relentless work-rate and communication to our Ireland U18’s Six Nations Campaign”.

Caitlin is still buzzing after the competition held during the Easter break. On an athlete’s level she enjoyed the input and advice she received to improve her skill as centre player. “Just the small details in a tackle that make it more dominant or movement in defense. Adjustments that help to stop a team, that just adds to the performance.”

Now she is hoping to be chosen for the Rugby Sevens Team as well. Having played rugby with her club, Co Cavan RFC, her province, the IRFU Women’s National Talent Squad and the Ireland U18 WXV in recent months, coach Gill said she is a “great example of a player who has come through the Girl’s Rugby Pathway”.

Caitlin is honoured and “very excited” to have been nominated for the Young Sport’s Award. “It shows women’s sports in Cavan is thriving when three women are nominated in this category”, she says.

Encouraged by her coach Audrey Maguire, she first tried out rugby when she was 14. She immediately loved it.

“All the girls were so nice, everyone was there for the enjoyment, more so than the actual element of playing.”

It was her coaches Audrey, Niall and Rory that spurred her interest in rugby and kept “edging me to do better and better”. Caitlin said she has those three people to thank for being the player that she is now.
