Gardaí to give lunchtime update on Carlow shooting

Incident room set up in Carlow Garda Station in response to fatal shooting of man (20s) yesterday (Sunday)

Gardaí in Carlow have set up an incident room as the investigation into a fatal shooting in which a man in his 20s died at a shopping centre car park continues.

A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has also been appointed to lead the garda investigation while a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to the deceased man’s family.

Gardaí say they will provide an update to the media at Carlow Garda Station at 12 noon today.

Gardaí have described the man who died as a “white Irish male”. He died after a firearm was discharged shortly after 6:15pm at Fairgreen Shopping Centre in the town yesterday (Sunday).

A female juvenile who was also injured in the incident received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries by paramedics at the scene.

The injured girl “did not require hospital treatment” and a garda statement said: “It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained”.

The Army Disposal Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were asked to attend the scene while members of the public who may have recorded footage of the incident were urged not to share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead to provide it to Gardaí at Carlow Garda Station.

Anyone who had cars parked in the vicinity of the car park where the shooting took place were unable to retrieve their vehicles last night. An update from gardaí today says they will issue a notice to owners about when they can collect their vehicles.

Gardaí says the EOD unit has completed its examination and the area has been declared safe.

However, the scene remains cordoned off this morning as both the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of the State Pathologist conduct examinations.

Meanwhile, the Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Simon Harris, issued a statement on the incident las night.

He said he has been in touch with the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant Rossa Mulcahy, “in relation to the incident and the assistance our defence forces are providing”.

His statement continued: “I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight.

“I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them. I know their families and communities will rally to support them.”

The Tánaiste also expressed his gratitude to emergency services for their work and response.
