Driving at 99km/h in a 50km/h zone
A motorist in Clones was detected driving at a speed of 99km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R212 over the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Another in the Dunboyne area in County Meath was detected driving at 114km/h in a 60km/h zone on R147.
The motorists were among three thousand drivers who were detected exceeding speed limits over the weekend, according to figures from an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation.
The operation was in place from 7am on May 29 until 7am this morning (June 3).
During this period, there was one fatality on our roads, while fourteen serious collisions resulted in fourteen individuals sustaining severe and life-threatening injuries.
One hundred and sixty seven arrests took place for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Meanwhile over 210 charge notices were issued to motorists using their mobile phones and over 70 for no seatbelts.
Over 215 fixed charge notices were given to unaccompanied learner drivers, with 99 vehicles seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied.
Three hundred and eighty vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance.
"An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road," a garda spokesperson stated.
