Cottage market goes full-on Cruinniú
An impressive programme of events has been arranged across County Cavan for Cruinniú na nÓg, a day of free creative activities for children and young people under the age of 18 years. Here is one of our top five highlights...
Con Smith Park will become a Cruinniú na nÓg HQ at the eagerly anticipated The Cottage Market on Saturday, June 7.
Cottage Market is always a great event for children, but this year they have upped their game as they celebrate children's creativity in style. Children and young people can enjoy an engaging and interactive space to create, imagine, and explore through a variety of fun, hands-on activities.
“From storytelling to giant knitting, interactive art, and a pop-up Gaeltacht, our activities are designed to encourage participation, self-expression, and creativity in an inclusive and welcoming environment,” says Cottage Market organiser Imelda Mullen.
There are two special readings of 'Holly and the Lucky Tree' by environmentalist Barry Kavanagh, inspiring children to see litter-picking as a positive, rewarding act.
“To bring the story to life, a 'lucky tree' will be planted in Con Smith Park,” adds Imelda.
Children and young people will collaborate with Ballyconnell Knits to create Cavan’s longest scarf using giant knitting needles and chunky yarn, turning traditional crafting into an exciting, large-scale art project.
Baby Maze is a simple maze designed for babies and toddlers to crawl, toddle, and walk through, providing a fun, sensory-filled experience for our youngest age group.
There will also be a Community Giant Chalkboard where children can draw, doodle, and write messages, allowing them to express their creativity in a fun, temporary art installation.
Finally the park will host a Pop-up Gaeltacht with Gaelphobal an Chabháin.
“The Gaeltacht will provide a dedicated Irish-language space in the park, where young people can gather to use their cúpla focal in a fun, engaging way,” Imelda explained.
Six volunteers wearing “Pop-Up” t-shirts will lead interactive activities to encourage spoken Irish throughout the day.
This event is open to all children and young people in County Cavan. A special effort will be made to engage harder-to-reach groups, including children with disabilities, those from diverse backgrounds, and those in direct provision.
Cruinniú na nÓg takes place on June 7 with activities ranging from workshops and tutorials to recitals and readings. You can find more events in Cavan here.
