Tuned to creativity

An impressive programme of events has been arranged across County Cavan for Cruinniú na nÓg, a day of free creative activities for children and young people under the age of 18 years. Here is one of our top five highlights...

Over the past eight weeks, young musicians in Ballyconnell have participate in a series of dynamic musical workshops leading up to an exciting a Cruinniú na nÓg celebration at Lizzie Buggies' bar in Ballyconnell, June 7, from 4-5pm.

Ceol Arís, Ceol Ar Ais, facilitated by guitar impresario Daragh Slacke and others, was designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and nurture musical talent across a range of traditional instruments. But what started out as a way to teach traditional Irish music to young people soon evolved into something far more meaningful - building connections through shared practice and performance.

“What started as music sessions has grown into something much richer: young people learning how to become mummers, or rhymers, through costume, performance, and creative expression. We’re still at the beginning of that journey,” explains Daragh, who thanks Creative Engagements Officer Sharon Howe, Laura Brady and Tara Bannon from Ballyconnell Community Centre, and newly appointed Arts Officer Karina Charles for their enthusiastic support.

“Together, we’re creating a space for young people to confidently cross frontiers—not only between communities, but within themselves.”

Cruinniú na nÓg takes place on June 7 with activities ranging from workshops and tutorials to recitals and readings. You can find more events in Cavan here.
