Treacle scones
Recipe by Paula Heatley
A WORD FROM THE CHEF
Here is a lovely recipe for a variation on scones. We love treacle bread in this house so I decided to try out treacle scones. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!
INGREDIENTS
500g plain flour
3tsp baking powder
1tsp bread soda
1tsp cinnamon
1tsp mixed spice
100g butter
3tbsp brown sugar
2tbsp treacle
One egg
300ml butter milk
METHOD
Preheat your oven to 170c for 25-30 minutes.
In a bowl combine your flour, baking powder, bread soda and spices and add a pinch of salt.
Then add in your butter and rub this in with your fingers until it forms a breadcrumb-like texture; then add in your brown sugar and stir the mixture.
In a pan, add your milk and treacle and warm slightly to melt the treacle; then add this to your dry ingredients, along with your egg and mix well until a dough is formed
Turn your dough out onto a floured surface and bring together; then press it down till it’s about 2-3cm thick and cut out with a scone cutter. You can make them large or small; but remembers, if you make small scones, they will take less time to bake.
Place on a lined baking tray and brush the tops with a little milk and bake for 25-30 minutes depending on the size.
When baked, place on a wire rack to cool and serve with plenty of butter and a nice cuppa.
