Feeley takes council chair

Fianna Fáil's John Paul Feeley has been selected as Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council. He last served as the county's first citizen from June 2022-23.

In the 2024 local elections, the Blacklion representative was re-elected as a Fianna Fáil councillor for the Cavan–Belturbet area, securing 1,349 first-preference votes.

Following the 2024 elections, Fine Gael's TP O'Reilly was elected Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council for the 2024–2025 term, with Fianna Fáil's Niall Smith serving as Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Cllr Feeley said his election at today's June monthly meeting of Cavan County Council and AGM was a special day for his family. He thanked them for their support, wife Niamh and children Éamon and Siún, mum Patsy as well as the team at Kelly and Ryan solicitors, and all his supporters.

Cllr Feeley also paid tribute to his late father Eddie who represented his community for 22 years and served twice as Cathoirleach - 1996-97 and 2005-06.

Fine Gael's Winston Bennett, meanwhile, has been appointed as Leas-Cathaoirleach by his fellow elected council members.

He served as Cathaoirleach from 2009-10.
