Beloved Cavan postie retires

Paul Cox calls time on career with An Post after more than 30 years.

Today marks the final working day for one of Cavan Town’s most recognisable postmen.

Paul Cox began his career with An Post in 1994 and is set to retire after more than 30 years of dedication, laughs, and unforgettable deliveries.

As a young man in the 1970's Paul was already turning heads as a drummer in his father's band, and in the 80's found with bands like C60 and The Fireflys.

But it was through his role with An Post that Paul truly became a local institution.

Starting out on foot, he eventually graduated to a van as his delivery area expanded, and his knack for delivering the impossible gained him national attention.

From deciphering the most cryptic of addresses to delivering a letter simply addressed 'Ann and Jimmy', Paul’s intuition and determination is legendary.

Those efforts earned him the admiration not only from people but, unusually for a postman, from dogs as well. A heart-warming image of 'Buttons' collecting post from Paul each morning captured hearts worldwide.

Reflecting on his career, Paul told the Celt: “I've spent many great years working with An Post, working with many great colleagues, and in all types of weather. I've met and made many amazing friends along the way.”

Though he was due to retire last year, his contract was extended by 12 months- giving the community one more year to enjoy his daily chats and shared smiles.

Retirement won’t mean slowing down for Paul however. Ever the performer, he is already preparing for his next act- quite literally.

Recently Paul signed up as a film extra and has already been cast in four productions. “The future,” he says, “is in the movies.”
