€500k works underway at Dun an Rí Forest Park
Key recommendations contained within the published Dún an Rí Forest Park Masterplan.
Work has officially commenced on an exciting new €500,000 project to develop a landmark natural playground and recreational space at Dún an Rí Forest Park in Kingscourt.
The initiative, which received planning permission last year, went to tender for construction and is expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
The project marks a significant investment in outdoor recreation and community infrastructure in the region, and is set to feature a large natural playground designed to blend into the park’s picturesque woodland setting.
Alongside this, construction of a segregated path for pedestrians and cyclists, extending the existing connection from Kingscourt Town Centre to the forest park is also planned, while works to address long-standing issues around toilet facilities are also on the cards.
These are just some of the key recommendations contained within the published Dún an Rí Forest Park Masterplan.
Developed in collaboration with Coillte and led by the Belfast-based Paul Hogarth Company, the plan was launched in 2022 following public consultation.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Clifford Kelly visited the park recently, where early groundworks have already begun.
He praised the dedication of the team working on the project and highlighted the importance of the development for local families and visitors.
“It’s inspiring to see the effort and enthusiasm going into this project,” Cllr Kelly said. “Dún an Rí is a beloved destination, rich in biodiversity and natural beauty. The addition of a modern playground and recreational amenities will only enhance its appeal for locals and tourists alike.”
Cllr Kelly commended the collaboration between Cavan County Council and Coillte, expressing optimism for the future of the park.
“This is about creating a space where children can play, families can connect, and everyone can enjoy the serenity of this magnificent forest. I look forward to watching this vision come to life.”
