An Taoiseach Michael Martin and Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Niamh Smyth discussed the Border Tourism plans.

Two local regional projects included in Border Tourism Plan

Focused tourism projects will maximise visitors to this region

Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark in Cavan and Sliabh Beagh in Monaghan will receive a massive investment under the overall border tourism plan. An Taoiseach Michael Martin and Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Niamh Smyth attended the Shared Island Shared Destinations Project Overview in Cloughmore Centre Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor, where the details were discussed.

Minister Smyth said: "I’m delighted to see two local key tourism attractions included in the overall plan for this region. Both of these integral projects are set for a massive investment in this overall border tourism plan which will also include Carlingford Lough enhanced under the Shared Ireland approach.”

The outlined three cross-border regional projects are planned to be marketed as such with Tourism Ireland. Minister Smyth adds: “Additional budgets will be made through the Shared Island Fund to allow for further marketing of our counties as a tourism destination. I have no doubt that this will drive visitor numbers in both Cavan and Monaghan.”

Speaking to the officials from Tourism Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and Fáilte Ireland about the detailed plan from a tourism perspective “there was a huge excitement” reports the Minister. “I have no doubt that this focused tourism project on both sides of the border will maximise visitors to this region and I’m delighted to see both our local counties included in this project.”

Minister Smyth continued: “It’s the first of its kind when it comes to cross border tourism projects under the Shared Island Shared Destinations approach. As part of the project, Sliabh Beagh will see the development of a 73km of connected cross border walking trails to include, walking, cycling and equestrian. These will also include trailheads and gateways.” The infrastructure will also include interpretations, artwork and sculptures throughout the trail network.

The County Cavan in Cuilcagh Geopark investment will see onward connectivity to Shannon Pot through the Cavan Way. Trail development will also include interpretation, wayfinding and infrastructure. A new Community-based Interpretative centre will also be developed in the village of Glangevlin as part of these plans. “The new Shannon Pot Discovery Centre, due to open in 2026, will further elevate the region’s appeal,“ concludes Minister Smyth.
