Call for safety signage at popular Cavan lakes

Cavan County Council is being urged to examine the possibility of erecting safety signage at lakes around the county.

"When the sun comes out, people like to take to the water," Cllr T.P. O'Reilly (FG) pointed out while raising the issue.

Cllr Trevor Smith (FG) supported the motion, pointing out that they need to "raise awareness" on water safety.

Sinn Fein's Damien Brady described it as a "very worthy motion".

Cllr Philip Brady (FF) suggested that "local knowledge" be sought for "dangerous spots" at lakes, and the people could be warned where these places are.

"Our lakes are our beaches here in Cavan," Cllr Patricia Walsh (FF) pointed out, adding that this is where people go when there is good weather.

Director of Services, Paddy Connaughton, explained that there are no "designated bathing areas" in County Cavan.

Speaking after the meeting, a local authority spokesperson stated that, although there are no designated bathing areas in the county at present, the council will, in consultation with Water Safety Ireland, "explore the possibility of erecting safety information signage at unofficial bathing areas that are known to be frequented by swimmers."
