Road works continue across Cavan-Belturbet District

Road re-construction work are continuing right across the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District.

Drainage is ongoing or complete on the R200-3 Bellavally to Carty's Bridge/ Glangevlin; the L-15122 at Drumullan; the L-1029 Corracomera (Corlough) Road; the L-50451 Gortaclogher, Bawnboy; the L-50411 Snugborough Road; and the L-1059 Whitefield Cross to Ardlougher (Phase 1).

Surface dressing preparation is being carried out on the R-201 Killeshandra to Carrigallen Road and on the L-5041 Moher Road. “There is a considerable amount of time spent doing that work. A job that's going to last. We're not just dealing with the road,” Senior Area Engineer Paul Mulligan told councillors elected to the Cavan-Belturbet MD when they met at Ballyconnell Community Centre recently.

Of the roadworks at Moher Road he, Mr Muligan said that stretch will be complete from Killeshandra to the county border.

Traffic calming measures meanwhile have been introduced on the L-6633 Athbara.

A lot of the works that take place, Mr Mulligan stated, involve engagement with local residents beforehand. He complimented them for their cooperation. In respect of Athbara, the engineer said it had been years in the planning. “It's doing what it's supposed to do,” he said of the ramps put in.

Road reconstructions

Other road reconstruction projects currently underway include the L6-036 Killynebber; L-60361 Resevoir Road; L55321 Kilmore Upper/Dansfor (Drumhecknagh Road);L-55321 Drumard/Derryniggan; L-15122 Drumard Road; L5515 Kilconny-Raheelan, Belturbet; and the L5046 Cloneary - all more or less a third complete at the point the meeting took place.

Mr Mulligan reserved special praise for local Tidy Towns volunteers with whom the council worked closely at Farnham Road in Cavan Town and on the approach to Killeshandra Town, where new artworks have been installed.

He also welcomed the restoration of a panoramic sign at Gallow's Hill overlooking Cavan Town, which had been vandalised in the past. He also mentioned a rain harvesting facility installed at the old fire station in Blacklion in partnership with the local Tidy Towns group there.

“Tidy Towns are leaders on the green agenda,” he enthused, before outlining other projects in the pipeline, which include roadworks on several sections of the R205 Ballymore.

Contractors will return to works being carried out at Currin, and he said the council are “already” exploring what routes need prioritising up to 2030.

Surface dressing will be applied to the Yellow Road outside Belturbet at O'Reilly's Concrete, with the “other half” to be done next year.

Fianna Fáil's Áine Smith was informed that works are continuing at the junction to Farnham School near Cavan Town, with surface dressing scheduled for June.

Sinn Féin's Damien Brady asked if something could be done about hedging exiting Ballyconnell along the Ballinamore Road. Signs also need mending at Tate's Cross, he pointed out.

Independent Brendan Fay asked if the council might look at repairs at Gannon's Cross, and sought an up date on Geopark signage, particularly to highlight Turbet Island in Belturbet.

Cllr John Paul Feeley highlighted that there are “quite a few bad potholes” on the Glan to Blacklion Road at present.

Cllrs Niamh Brady (FG) and Patricia Walsh (FF), welcomed the works, the latter also asking for the council to take a look at the Cootehill Road junction in Cavan Town.
