Date already set for Killeshandra Camino 2026

Over four hundred walkers took part in this year’s Killeshandra Camino last Saturday (June 21).

After completing its fourth year, organisers of the 35.5 kilometre walk (with shorter routes also available) have hailed it a success and are already planning next year’s event.

“We couldn’t be more happy. The day was absolutely brilliant,” said Eileen Gormley, project manager for the Killeshandra Camino, speaking to the Celt on behalf of the committee.

She described how, if you’re not from Killeshandra and you’re not walking the Camino, you are most likely behind the scenes organising the route, stewarding the event, handing out refreshments, or doing some of the many jobs that make the walk the success it is.

The community spirit on the day was palpable, with efforts extending beyond the core community in the town and into the countryside where people put up signs to welcome walkers into their home to fill up water bottles or use their bathroom facilities.

“Everyone worked quietly in the days and weeks coming up to it. These things are the foundation for everything else that follows really.

“It certainly takes a village to run our Camino and what a village we have in Killeshandra.”

The feedback on the day and the comments on social media afterwards showed that “people really enjoyed it”, said Eileen.

The organisers know that each person has their own reason for doing the Camino, and they thanked everyone who came out this year to help or walk. The date has already been set for the fifth Killeshandra Camino, which will take place on June 20, 2026.

“Walk the Camino, it’s irrelevant whether you do one kilometre or 35.5 kilometres. You’re doing it for you,” encouraged Eileen, adding that the “fun and the camaraderie” on the day is the best thing about it.

“What you walk is between you and the sole of your foot. Just do it for you, do it for fun, do it for the craic. Bring your friend and enjoy it.”
