McKiernan pleads guilty to two sample charges

A former cathaoirleach has pleaded guilty to two sample charges of theft at his arraignment in Trim Circuit Court today.

Sean McKiernan with an address at Trinity Bungalow, Virginia Road, Bailieborough, had been charged with 58 counts of theft totalling €172,000 at various unknown locations within the State from Navan Mental Health Housing Association in amounts ranging from €500 to €7,500 in 2019.

Appearing before Judge John Martin, the 43 year old pleaded guilty to two sample charges - the theft of €5,230 on March 26, 2019 at an unknown location; and also the theft of €800 on April 6, 2020.

He was remanded on continuing bail. A sentencing date will be set when he appears before the next session of Trim Circuit Court on October 21.

A Fine Gael councillor for Bailieborough electoral area from 2007-2014, Sean McKiernan made history in 2011 when at age 29 he was elected as the youngest ever chairman, or Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council. He was returned unopposed to the position.

He was also a member of Cavan/Monaghan ETB and served a term as its cathaoirleach.
