Former GP and cllr laid to rest

Tributes have been paid to Dr Eamonn C.J. McDwyer, Cullies, Cavan, retired GP and politician who passed away last Thursday, July 3.

Dr McDwyer served as a Fianna Fáil member of Cavan Town Council for 30 years during which time he was also Cathaoirleach. He was also a member of the Cavan Vocational Education Committee (VEC).

Deputy Brendan Smith said we was “very saddened” to learn of the death of Dr McDwyer. He expressed his sincere sympathy to his wife Anna, son, daughters and extended family.

“Eamonn was visionary in advocating strongly for a range of developments in Cavan Town, always in the best interests of the local community. He put his knowledge and experience to good use as a public representative.”

Deputy Smith described Dr McDwyer as a “dedicated and hardworking GP” and revealed how, over recent days, he heard many of his former patients speak “glowingly of the healthcare he provided for so many over decades in an extensive practice”.

At his funeral mass last Sunday (July 6) at the Cathedral of Ss Patrick and Felim, Dr McDwyer was described as a “very, very good doctor” whose “kindness and generosity was experienced by many people” in Cavan over the years.

“He was hugely respected and he guided many of his patients through very difficult illnesses and tough times in their lives,” those gathered at his funeral mass heard.

“Even during Covid he was trying to go back in to help out in whatever way he could as a practitioner. His patients were always first.”

Dr McDwyer passed away peacefully at Cavan General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Ena McDwyer, his daughter Karen and her mother Mairlis, brothers Damien and Ray and his son in law Rory O’Sullivan.

Eamonn is sadly missed by his loving wife and best friend Anna; his children Paula (Stephen Hughes), Eamonn (Mary Hyland), Verna (Joey Mills), Rachel (Gerry Coyle) and Leah O’Sullivan, his step-daughter Lisa Quinn; his adored grandchildren Caoimhe, Laura, Stephen, Ellen, Carina, Emma, Jessica, Mark, Josh, Dillon and Naoise; brothers Tommy and Denis; sisters Patricia Pidcock, Keyna McEvoy and Noleen Archer; in laws, nephews, nieces, all his extended family and a wide circle of friends.
