Hole-in-one for Leona
Leona Maguire delivered a moment to remember during the opening round of the Amundi Evian Championship in France, carding a brilliant hole-in-one overlooking Lake Geneva on the second hole. From 164 yards, the Cavan star holed out in style on the downhill par-3, her first-ever ace on the LPGA Tour.
"Looked good in the air," said Maguire afterwards speaking to Golfweek. "You're never sure on that hole until the ball actually lands. Sort of a perfect morning for it. Not much wind which is nice, especially on that tee box."
Starting her round at the 10th with a bogey, Maguire quickly found her rhythm and didn’t look back. She went on to shoot a scintillating 6-under-par 65, putting her in the early clubhouse lead at one of golf’s biggest events. Her round left her a stroke ahead of Australia’s Gabriela Ruffels, with several other contenders close behind, including recent Irish Open winner Lottie Woad.
After four straight weeks of tournament play, Maguire was thankful for a brief breather ahead of this major. Now, with momentum on her side and that unforgettable ace under her belt, she’s firmly in the hunt for her first major championship title.
