Gaelbhratach flag for Knocktemple NS
The Gaelbhratach flag was raised at Knocktemple National School as the school year closed.
Minister of State, Niamh Smyth, was given the honour of raising the flag for the students, which was a symbol of their wonderful achievement and work.
“This flag acknowledges the school’s work and commitment as students, staff and parents to promote our native language in situations and activities outside of the classroom,” Minister Smyth stated.
The Gaelbhratach scheme was established in response to the need to create natural opportunities to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. The scheme officially began in the 2012/13 school year at primary level and at secondary level the following year. In the years since, the scheme has worked with every kind of school in all corners of the country – from both urban and rural schools seeking to breathe new life into Gaeilge, to Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools where it is spoken as the main language every day.
The initiative in Knocktemple was led by co-ordinator teacher, Ruth White Lynch, who was assisted by Principal Vincent Mulvey, teacher Shane McHugh and students Oisín Enright, Emily Grey, Cuan O’Higgins, Doireann Shortt, Dearbhla Gilsenan, Caolán Cullen and Lucille Murray.
Deputy Smyth sincerely thanked them for inviting her to the school.
The day also marked the retirement of Principal Vincent Mulvey after 14 years at the helm and the school secretary Mrs Miriam Gilsenan Keoghan after 11 years of service at Knocktemple National School. “Wishing you both the very best of luck in your retirement,” Minister Smyth stated.
