Aviation meets glamping in Killeshandra

A new glamping location officially took off in Killeshandra at the weekend.

Overlooking the town lake, the glamping pods at AeroHeaven were given a new lease of life. They once served as aeroplanes and have now been refurbished to offer a unique overnight experience in the heart of Cavan.

Austin Masterson's idea is four years in the making, inspired by the fishermen who reside in his 'Lakeview Cottage' annually.

“Anyone that's in the house, they're always talking about the view I have here.”

Indeed, the location, situated on a hill overlooking the lake, is breathtaking.

“It's a beautiful view,” they told him. “That would be an ideal location for glamping pods.”

Austin started the process three years ago when he applied for planning permission.

The Killeshandra man looked all over the country before finally stumbling upon the aeroplane pods.

Having served in the army, Austin had jumped out of them on several occasions. The idea is a reflection of his past, while also serving as a one-of-a-kind experience in his hometown.

“This is completely different,” Austin told the Celt.

The spacious glamping pod provides all the features of an aircraft; a curved roof, small windows with sliding shutters and even has the original branding of some of the airlines on the exterior. However, the novel, tranquil experience offers more than jetting off into the sunset; each of the three homes has its own private hot tub where you can sit and enjoy the green environs of the lakeside, while listening to tunes from the built-in Bluetooth speakers. LED lighting, full furnishings, kitchen and barbecue facilities can also be found at the self-catering experience.

Those visiting can also bring their fishing rods and cast out down at the lake, while the town itself is a walker's haven with the loop of the lakes, the Killeshandra Camino Calling, and the nearby Killykeen Forest Park.

The facility is also home to an indoor sauna, changing room and a six-person hot tub, if guests decide they want to stroll up the hill and meet some others. Meanwhile, they will also open up their sauna and hot tub to locals for afternoon tea package bookings in the future.

In January this year, construction commenced, and after final checks, the AeroHeaven officially launched last Friday with bookings already coming in.

Austin, and his daughter Fiona who is helping him in the venture, sincerely thanked everybody who has helped them on their journey to date, including O'Reilly O'Byrne Construction, the locals of the town, friends, family and they particularly praised the LEADER programme.

Guests can stay for any length of time, with a higher discount offered per night for longer stays.
