The late Hughie Smith from Crosskeys.

Honouring Hughie’s legacy of bringing people together in Crosskeys

This Sunday, the community of Crosskeys will come together for a special tractor, car and motorbike run in memory of Hughie Smith, who sadly passed away in March after a short battle with cancer.

Known far and wide as a talented mechanic, a proud publican, and one of the founding members of the Crosskeys Vintage Club, Hughie poured his heart into every part of community life. His love for old engines and vintage machines wasn’t just a hobby it was something he shared with everyone, sparking friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

Hughie was first and foremost a family man - a devoted husband and a proud father of eight. His workshop door was always open, his pub always full of laughter, and his time always freely given.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Hughie's wife Eileen is encouraging people to come along to the event and raise money for a good cause in the process.

"This event is not just about the vehicles on the road, it’s about celebrating a man who helped build the vintage club in Crosskeys. Every tractor, car and motorbike taking part is a tribute to his hard work, his generosity, and his love for his community," she said.

All proceeds from the day will go towards palliative care and night nurses, causes very close to our hearts after the care and kindness shown to him in his final months. There will be music food and plenty of laughter.

The family invite everyone to join them this Sunday, August 3, at 2pm in Crosskeys village, to remember Hughie Smith and to continue his legacy of bringing people together.

"We would like to thank the Crosskeys vintage club in organising this event without them it wouldn’t be taking place," said Eileen on behalf of the Smith family.
