HSE plans new children's respite services for Cavan
There are plans to 'mirror' respite services in Monaghan in Cavan
The HSE says it intends to advance the development of “similar” children’s residential respite services Cavan as it is currently actively working on in neighbouring Monaghan.
Currently, Annalee House in Cootehill continues to operate on a shared basis, providing one week of adult respite followed by one week of children’s respite.
Following a campaign to address the lack of dedicated services available in Monaghan, they moved to secure a property at Drumbear, Ballybay Road, for redevelopment as a purpose-built, four-bedroom children’s residential respite facility.
The property was purchased by HSE Estates Dublin North East and a design team has been appointed, with one-bedroom to be made into a self-contained apartment.
“Renovation works will be carried out under a capital project managed by HSE Estates, with completion expected in Quarter 1, 2026. The facility will be required to meet regulatory standards for designated centres as assessed by HIQA prior to opening.”
In the interim, a two-year children’s residential respite service was established in Urbalkirk, near Monaghan town in October 2024, and is currently being operated by The Talbot Group under Service Arrangement with the HSE.
A spokesperson for the HSE confirmed that in Cavan the plan for the HSE is to mirror this progress.
“The HSE is committed to delivering equitable respite services in both Cavan and Monaghan. It is intended that similar services will be developed in County Cavan.”
