Defendant charged with trafficking a person

A man has appeared before a court in Cavan charged with trafficking a person for the purposes of exploitation in a case that dates back more than 10 years.

The male, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the alleged injured party in the case, appeared via video-link from Dublin's Wheatfield Prison before Judge Stephanie Coggins at the vacation sittings of Cavan District Court last Thursday.

It was stated by Garda Sergeant Damien Galligan that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are “still outstanding”.

He added that due to the serious “nature of the charge”, a “lot of work” is still required in moving the case forward, which involved “a lot of information” being transmitted from authorities in “other European countries”.

The alleged offence the man is charged with relates to trafficking a person for the purposes of exploitation at an address in Monaghan on dates unknown between April 4 and June 25, 2015.

The man was remanded in custody to appear again before a sitting of Monaghan District Court later this month.
