Ulster GAA tribute to former President

Mr Galligan, who served as the 37th president of the Ulster Council from 2019 to 2022

Ulster GAA has expressed “deep sorrow and profound shock” at the passing of its former president, Oliver Galligan, a widely respected figure in the GAA community across both Cavan and the province.

Mr Galligan, who served as the 37th president of the Ulster Council from 2019 to 2022, played a pivotal role in guiding the organisation through the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A lifelong member of Cavan Gaels, his leadership and dedication at every level of the GAA earned him widespread admiration.

Mr Galligan’s contributions extended well beyond his presidency, having previously held the roles of Ulster GAA PRO, treasurer and vice-president.

He was also a long-serving member of the Casement Park Stadium Board and served on the Central Competitions Control Committee and the Croke Park Stadium Board.

As a player, Mr Galligan had an equally distinguished career, winning three Cavan Senior Football Championships with Cavan Gaels and representing the Breffni County at senior level from 1969 to 1973.

He captained Cavan to an Ulster Minor Football Championship in 1967 and played senior football for 17 years at club level.

For his club Mr Galligan served as chairman of Cavan Gaels and was a member of the Cavan County Board for 15 years, including a term as Development Officer.

He joined the Ulster Council as an officer in 2010 and served with distinction across several key roles.

In a heartfelt statement, Ulster GAA said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Frances, sons John and Oliver (Jnr), daughter Elaine (Peter), and the wider Galligan family circle. We remember also his colleagues in Cavan Gaels and Cavan GAA. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

His club, Cavan Gael's, also issued a statement:
