Roslea man dies unexpectedly on Cuilcagh
THE MAN who died on the Cavan side of Cuilcagh Mountain on Sunday morning has been named as John ‘Johnny’ Murray who was originally from Roslea, Co Fermanagh.
Johnny, who was in his 30s, was a husband and father to two young children who had made Lisnaskea their home in recent years.
He passed away on Cuilcagh following what Gardaí are describing a “medical incident” on Sunday.
In a statement to the Celt, Gardaí said they attended a medical incident involving a man at Commas, Swanlibar, Co Cavan at approximately 9:45am on Sunday.
The North West Mountain Rescue Team and other emergency services were called out at approximately 10:25am to assist Mr Murray on Cuilcagh Mountain.
Among the emergency services that attended were Ballyconnell Fire Brigade and the National Ambulance Service, Ballyconnell. A helicopter was also deployed to the scene, according to local residents.
A Garda statement confirmed that the man “became ill and subsequently passed away".
A spokesperson from NWMR said their team “assisted with the incident” and left the area just over an hour later at around 11:30am.
Sadly, Mr Murray was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed from the mountain for a post mortem in Cavan mortuary and the local coroner informed.
Officers say the results of the post mortem will determine the course of the Garda investigation, however, their statement says Mr Murray is believed to have died as a result of a medical incident.
At the time of going to print on Tuesday, no arrangements for Johnny Murray’s funeral had been announced. A spokesperson from the Roslea Parish Office said family and friends were still awaiting the completion of a post mortem.
Johnny leaves behind his wife, Clare and their children, Dara and Una, as well as a large extended family. He was predeceased by his mother, Angela.
Many tributes have been paid to Johnny online with one person describing him as “an amazing, kind, gentle natured man” and another posting that “Johnny always had a smile, loved life, he was an absolute gentleman.”
When news of Johnny’s unexpected death reached the border village of Roslea in Co Fermanagh on Sunday, the community was still coming to terms with the death of one of his contemporaries: young husband and father, Ciaran Cassidy, from Roslea who died suddenly at home on Thursday.
One online post reads: “This past week has rocked our small community with sadness with Ciaran's death and now Johnny's.”
Cavan Councillor from the area, John Paul Feeley (FF) said he was “very sorry” to hear the news and was thinking and praying for the young man’s families at this time.
Cllr Feeley also acknowledged the effort of emergency services who “came together” in a rescue effort.
