Café Nua 'grew and grew'
MEET OUR FINALISTS: EMERGING NEW BUSINESS
Café Nua has levelled up both Belturbet and Cavan’s food scene since bringing their baking and cooking skills to the county.
Latvian sisters Vita Blauberga and Inta Tokareva first opened their café in Belturbet in August 2020, when locals had the joy of tasting their range of cakes, cookies, macarons, pastries, pies, eclairs and more.
They also provide a range of breakfast and lunch options made with local produce.
It was down to the success of their café in Belturbet that the sisters decided to take their culinary excellence to the county town in December of last year, a move which proved to be yet another success.
“It’s great, it’s going well,” Vita said of business in Cavan.
Fittingly named Café Nua, customers can always expect to try a different flavour in their cafés - from pistachio to lemon, raspberry and more combined with “good coffee”.
Starting out with just the two of them, the business now employs 16 members of staff across their two locations. For the Latvian sisters, baking is in the veins. Their grandfather Herman opened a successful bread bakery near Riga in the 1940s.
“We are actually self-made bakers. We have always had baking in our family, it’s coming from our mum, from our grandmother, from her parents. It’s always been in the family.”
When deciding to bring their talents to Cavan, Vita said: “We wanted to do something that we really loved to do.
“Our idea was just for the two of us, Inta would be in the kitchen and I would be at the front and we would run a small business.”
However their idea proved a massive success as their food became popular among many.
“It grew and grew and grew,” Vita enthused.
That growth has expanded to an online service. The innovative sisters have an online shop where they take customised orders for cakes, cupcakes and macarons for special occasions such as birthdays and family celebrations.
Vita said it is “hard to describe” how she felt upon receiving the nomination for this year’s awards.
“I’m very thankful because I never actually expected this. It’s nice to get it.
“We are both very thankful to all the customers who come back and support us.”
