Garden of Reflection
Memorial in honour of Detective Adrian Donohoe and his colleague Tony Golden opened
A MEMORIAL and garden of reflection have been opened in honour of Detective Adrian Donohoe and his colleague, Tony Golden, at Dundalk Garda Station.
The Garda Commissioner, Justin Kelly, hosted a ceremony to unveil the memorial and officially open the garden in Dundalk last week.
Members of Gda Donohoe and Gda Golden’s families were in attendance as was the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan.
Detective Adrian Donohoe and Garda Anthony Golden were both murdered in the line of duty.
Adrian Donohoe was a married father of two from Kilnaleck who had served in An Garda Síochána for 19 years when he was shot by an armed robbery gang at Lordship Credit Union in Dundalk in 2013.
Adrian, who was stationed in Dundalk, was on a routine cash escort on January 25, 2013, when he was fatally shot.
He grew up on a small farm in Kilnaleck with his three brothers and two sisters. He was well-known in Cavan as a gifted footballer for Crosserlough before he went on to represent Cavan GAA at Under-21 level. He joined the guards in 1994.
Garda Anthony Golden (36) was on duty at Omeath Garda Station in Co Louth on Sunday, October 11, 2015, when he responded to a report of a female who had made an assault complaint against her partner at her home.
When he entered the woman’s house, three shots were fired fatally injuring the father of three from Mayo.
An Garda Síochána honoured their slain colleagues at the special event last Thursday, which was held in Adrian Donohoe’s Dundalk station.
The Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, was formally met on arrival at the station by Garda Commissioner Kelly and a formal guard of honour.
Many took to social media with memories of the two fallen members and to comment on the “beautiful tribute” paid to them by the Gardaí.
Speaking at the unveiling of the memorial Commissioner Kelly said: “Today is not just about remembering Adrian and Tony’s ultimate sacrifice but also to show the Donohoe and Golden families that Adrian and Tony’s names, their courage and service will be cherished forever.”
