Cavan house fire victim named

The man who tragically lost his life in a house fire at his residence on the outskirts of Cavan Town on Monday evening has been named.

He was Jim O'Brien from Drummullen, Cavan, and is believed to have been in his fifties.

Gardaí and a spokesperson for Cavan Fire Services confirmed details of the fire to The Anglo-Celt yesterday (Tuesday).

Emergency services attended fire at a domestic residence in the Killygowan area at around 7:35pm on October 6.

Local fire fighters from Cavan and Killeshandra stations attended the scene and extinguished the fire. They remained there until about 12:30am.

"On arrival, firefighters encountered a well-developed fire, with the roof structure already having collapsed and the first floor completely enveloped.

"Teams using breathing apparatus were committed to the building and brought the fire under control. Following a detailed search under challenging conditions, the remains of one deceased adult casualty were discovered upstairs in the building," the council spokesperson confirmed.

"All of Cavan County Fire service convey our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the deceased."

The scene was preserved for a technical examination and the Coroner notified.

"Enquiries are ongoing," a garda spokesperson stated.

Jim is survived by his son Jack; his siblings Sean, Maura, Anne, Barry, Alita, Kieran, Catriona, Damien, and Derek.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.
