Gardaí investigate spate of burglaries

Gardaí are investigating a recent spate of burglaries across Cavan, including one incident where a homeowner returned from attending a wake to find their house being burgled.

It comes as gardaí commenced its winter phase of its targeted operational activity, ‘Operation Thor’.

This annual increased enforcement operation is aimed at preventing burglars from exploiting the reduced hours of daylight.

Residential burglary tends to be higher in winter with international evidence traditionally suggesting a seasonal trend - a surge in burglaries of up to 20% in winter months when daylight hours are at the lowest level.

The most recent reported incident occurred in the townland of Corr, Ballinagh, at approximately 7:40pm on October 4, 2025, when the burglars were disturbed by the homeowner’s return and fled the scene.

Despite their quick escape, the raiders managed to steal a sum of cash and several items of jewellery.

Gardaí have confirmed that investigations are “ongoing”.

It is one of several reported burglaries in the county in recent weeks. Another occurred in the Cootehill area on October 1, when a house was illegally entered and personal items stolen.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for assistance, particularly from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or vehicles.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant, ensure homes are secured when unattended, and report any unusual activity in their neighbourhoods. Anyone with information in connection with these break-ins is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station at 049-4368800.
