Progress on Ulster Canal project

A briefing on Phase three of the Ulster Canal Restoration Project took place recently.

This stage of the Ulster Canal Restoration project will involve connecting phase one from Castle Saunderson to phase two at Clonfad. This significant investment will consist of 10km of new and restored canal. Once completed, this will link Clones by navigable waterway to the Erne system, a very important resource for County Cavan.

Deputy Brendan Smith attended the briefing and has welcomed the development. "I was very glad to meet with Waterways Ireland along with my colleague Senator Robbie Gallagher, for a briefing regarding phase three of the Ulster Canal Restoration project," he stated.

"The canal will connect onward to the wider waterway network, including the Shannon and Dublin, providing a wonderful amenity that will bring recreational, social and economic benefits to the area," added Deputy Smith.
