There was great news for Cavan hurling this evening as Liam O'Brien picked up the prestigious Lory Meagher Cup Player of the Year award.

The 25-year-old Waterford native enjoyed an outstanding campaign as Cavan reached the final of the competition, giving a great account of themselves against a star-studded New York side. O'Brien scored 1-7 on that occasion.

A trainee vet, he was based in Cavan for two years and was a tremendous addition to the hurling scene, winning a county SHC medal with East Cavan Gaels and playing football for Drumlane also.

Liam's award was announced at tonight's event in Croke Park and recognised his fantastic performances throughout the competition.
